In Puddles, language itself becomes a landscape of longing, misunderstanding, and belonging. Set in Berlin from the 1990s to the present, the play revolves around three university friends — Judith, Max, and Nora — whose relationships shift and reshape over time. Max and Judith share a past, but Judith’s travels create a distance; meanwhile Nora, who switches effortlessly between German and English, stays behind, building a life, a home, a marriage, trying for a baby. Their connection faces the inevitable tensions that come with love, language, loyalty, and the choices we make when life pulls us in different directions.
What makes Puddles especially striking is its use of multilingual dialogue — Judith speaking only English, Max only German, and Nora moving between the two. With original music underscoring the emotional arcs, the production shines a light on how language can both separate and unite, and how silence or mis-communication can carry as much weight as spoken words. It’s a sensitive, intimate exploration of friendship, identity, and how personal histories collide with the unpredictable flow of time.
